Fear of knee surgery: distracted and relaxed as a patient with the HappyMed Video Glasses
Look forward to a trip to the Maldives during your knee surgery instead of letting your thoughts circle around possible complications. Our managing director tested the HappyMed video glasses during his own knee surgery.
Fear of knee surgery because of the anaesthetic
Although the risk of a fatal outcome from general anaesthesia during knee surgery is very low, the procedure can bring additional challenges for older people or those in poor health.
The German Federal Association for Outpatient Surgery (Bundesverband für Ambulantes Operieren) states that serious complications from general anaesthesia are rare, but side effects such as nausea, circulatory problems or confusion can occur after the anaesthetic.

With a partial anaesthetic (spinal anaesthesia), you may also worry about paralysis and thus about the feeling of losing control. If you are awake during the surgery and can no longer feel your legs, that can set your mind racing and you worry that you will never regain control.
Yet the risk of permanent paralysis after spinal anaesthesia is extremely low. According to estimates, the incidence of spinal epidural haematomas, which can lead to neurological damage, is around 1:150,000 to 1:300,000.
Fear of knee surgery because of possible complications
In most cases, no complications occur after knee surgery. The overall complication rate averages around 4.1%, which means that around 95.9% of patients come through the procedure without serious problems.
However, the likelihood of a successful course without complications depends heavily on the choice of hospital. In hospitals with the best quality results, the complication rate is at most 2.6%, while in hospitals with below-average results it is at least 6.1%. It is therefore important to find out about the quality of the hospitals under consideration before the procedure, in order to increase the chances of a surgery free of complications.

There is, for example, an increased risk of thrombosis. Studies show that venous thromboembolisms can occur after knee arthroscopies in up to 20% of cases. A primary infection of the knee prosthesis occurs in less than 1% of cases and arises when the immune system cannot sufficiently control the rapid multiplication of bacteria.
Fear of knee surgery because it is unclear how everything works in practice
The duration of knee surgery varies depending on the type of procedure, but is usually around 60 minutes. During the surgery, the medical team continuously monitors the patient's vital functions in order to ensure their safety. Once the procedure is complete, the patient is taken to the recovery room, where they recover from the anaesthesia under observation.
Reducing fear of knee surgery with spinal anaesthesia and the HappyMed Video Glasses
One possible disadvantage of knee surgery without general anaesthesia is that the patient remains awake during the procedure, which can cause fear or nervousness in some people. In such cases, the HappyMed Video Glasses can offer an ideal solution for minimising the impressions from the operating room. With these special video glasses, patients can watch relaxing films or listen to music in order to ease their fears. And the best part: thanks to the Carl Zeiss optics, the glasses are also perfectly suited to people who wear glasses.
Experience with knee surgery under spinal anaesthesia shows that many patients have fewer side effects such as nausea than with general anaesthesia. Patients often report that they recover more quickly after spinal anaesthesia and spend less time in the recovery room. Knee surgery with a partial anaesthetic is therefore a promising alternative.

Fear of knee surgery: for doctors, it is a routine procedure
Knee surgery is one of the safest and most effective ways to improve the quality of life of patients with chronic knee pain. Talking to the doctor, learning breathing techniques and using the HappyMed Video Glasses can help reduce the fear of knee surgery.
A detailed explanation of the procedure and the associated risks gives patients more clarity, which often eases their fears. This way, the doctor can hopefully noticeably reduce pain with the surgery.

FAQ
Haben Sie noch eine Frage?
Is knee surgery very painful?
Knee surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia or regional anaesthesia, so that the patient feels no pain during the procedure. Pain can occur after the operation, but it can be well controlled with painkillers.
What is the best time of year for knee surgery?
The best time of year for knee surgery depends on personal preferences and the healing process, but many patients prefer winter or spring in order to spend the rehabilitation phase in a temperate climate. In the summer months, warm weather could make swelling of the knee worse.
What should be initially avoided after knee surgery?
After knee surgery, you should initially avoid heavy lifting and climbing stairs in order to relieve the strain on the operated knee. Sporting activities that place heavy strain on the knee should be avoided for several weeks or months.
What should you eat the evening before knee surgery?
On the evening before knee surgery, you should have a light meal so as not to put strain on your stomach. Avoid fatty or heavily spiced foods in order to prevent nausea after the anaesthetic.
How should you sleep after knee surgery?
After knee surgery, it is advisable to sleep with the leg elevated in order to prevent swelling. Avoid putting strain on the operated leg or placing it in an uncomfortable position, so as to prevent additional pain.
