Since 2019, nine Asklepios clinics (in Harburg, Birkenwerder, Lindau, Weißenfels, Langen-Seligenstadt, Schwalmstadt, Wiesbaden, Bad Tölz, and the Südpfalzkliniken in Kandel and Germersheim) have been using the HappyMed video glasses as a ‘digital tranquilliser’.

This is because, during procedures under local anaesthesia or longer therapeutic interventions, patients do not experience pain but may still feel stressed because they are aware of the operation and feel anxious. This can affect medical risks and lead to a greater need for medication. To alleviate this inner tension, Asklepios Clinics rely on HappyMed video glasses. These allow patients to choose whether they would like to be distracted by a travel documentary, a concert or relaxation videos. There are also special films for children.

Framework agreement with Happymed for patient welfare

The Asklepios Clinics have now sigend a framework agreement with HappyMed to offer this form of ‘digital reassurance’.

“For us, patient wellbeing is our top priority – and we are happy to use innovative and effective technologies to achieve this,” says Prof. Dr Christoph U. Herborn, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Asklepios Clinics. “We were amazed by the immediate positive effects, as well as by the level of acceptance in the clinics, amongst staff and patients,” Prof. Herborn continues. When wearing the glasses, patients breathe more slowly, their heart rate is calmer, their individual perception of pain decreases, and as a result, fewer sedatives are required. Overall, the acceptance rate of gentler regional anaesthesia as an alternative to general anaesthesia is increasing. This approach can also have a positive impact on fears of doctors and hospitals. Ultimately, the use of the video glasses leads to higher patient satisfaction, as the manufacturer has observed.

In October 2021, the Asklepios Gesundleben blog also featured an article on the HappyMed video glasses: Kino im Kopf – Audiovisuelle Ablenkung bei der OP. Less stress, fewer medicines, no pain: video and audio glasses help patients forget about their upcoming operation.

Experiences with the HappyMed video glasses

Through their daily use of the HappyMed video glasses, the anaesthesia teams gained the following insights:

Video glasses help patients undergo procedures without feeling anxious

“It has been scientifically proven that stress, pain and anxiety are felt more intensely when one focuses on them – and this, in turn, affects blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate. With our new virtual reality glasses service, we alleviate this stressful situation and help patients undergo their procedure without fear.”

Dr. Matthias Mamier

Senior Consultant at the Department of Anaesthesiology, Asklepios Clinic Harburg

Less use of sedatives and less post-operative care required

“We can see that patients who use the video glasses have a more regular breathing rate, lower blood pressure and a slower heart rate. This means we can reduce the use of sedatives and, as a result, the amount of post-operative care required is also reduced.”

Dr. Harald Angerer

Head of Anaesthesiology, Asklepios Clinic, Pasewalk

"Patients who wear the glasses have a steady breathing rate, lower blood pressure and a slower heart rate. They are simply more relaxed, and this has a positive effect on the course of the operation. Another positive effect is that fewer medicines are required, which also reduces side effects following the operation. The glasses are also used at the patient’s request when they wake up in the recovery room after general anaesthesia, as the use of the video glasses aids the patient’s recovery in this instance too."
