Fear of surgery: distracted and relaxed as a patient with the HappyMed Video Glasses
Fear of surgery slows down recovery
Fear of surgery is widespread, and thoughts can circle endlessly around the anaesthesia, the procedure itself or possible postoperative pain. According to one study, 97% of patients experience preoperative anxiety, which can have a negative effect on recovery.*

Fears of surgery are unnecessary
More than 300 Asklepios, Helios and Sana clinics and others use the HappyMed Video Glasses so that patients can distract themselves audiovisually before, during and after surgery under regional anaesthesia.
Content can be chosen entirely according to individual taste, whether it is a soothing Beethoven concert, a nature programme about the northern lights or a Laurel and Hardy film from the good old days.
Our HappyMed Video Glasses are frequently used even during cardiac catheter procedures. Many of these procedures are routine for doctors, but understandably, patients are often particularly nervous and frightened during surgery close to the heart. For some procedures, a certain ability of the patient to cooperate is helpful, which is why the HappyMed Video Glasses are used for audiovisual distraction while communication remains possible at intervals during the surgery. The headphones can be deactivated on the outer sides with a small lever, so cooperation through sight and hearing is possible at any time.

Not waking up again: this happens very rarely nowadays
For many people, the idea of being put into a deep sleep with medication is frightening, especially when it is their first anaesthesia. According to the German Federal Association for Outpatient Surgery (Bundesverband für Ambulantes Operieren), however, the risk of not waking up from general anaesthesia is extremely low today, at less than 0.009%.
Fortunately, with most knee and hip surgeries, you no longer need to worry so much about not waking up, because it is now common practice to perform them under regional anaesthesia, also known as spinal anaesthesia.

Is your surgery coming up in a few days? We can send video glasses to any clinic free of charge. Galileo shows in 60 seconds how our glasses accompany you during surgery:
In use against fear of surgery in more than 300 hospitals since 2015
We have conducted more than 40 studies together with hospitals ourselves. In short, sedatives can be reduced in 80% of all procedures, and 92% of patients would use HappyMed again. Here are a few specific excerpts on anxiety reduction from studies by other scientists that motivated us to develop the HappyMed Video Glasses →
“82% of patients state that audiovisual distraction reduced their anxiety during elective limb surgery under regional anaesthesia.”
Pepper et al. (2016), Survey of 50 patients undergoing awake surgery with audiovisual distraction, Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, 41, e156.
“For children, watching cartoons has proven to be very effective in relieving preoperative anxiety, even more effective than playing with toys.”
Lee et al. (2012), Cartoon distraction alleviates anxiety in children during induction of anesthesia, Anesthesia and Analgesia, 115(5), 1168–1173.
“Distraction using videos significantly reduces anxiety in children during inhalation induction and effectively manages anxiety in the preoperative phase.”
Mifflin et al. (2012), Streamed video clips to reduce anxiety in children during inhaled induction of anesthesia, Anesthesia and Analgesia, 115(5), 1162–1167.

On the other side of the fear of surgery lies a life with more joy in movement
The big advantage of regional anaesthesia is that you can take your first steps after surgery sooner with the help of a physiotherapist. This means you reach the ultimate goal of your surgery faster: being able to move better and with less pain again and enjoying life anew.

Laurel and Hardy are with you before, during and after surgery
A Laurel and Hardy film is one example of a possible audiovisual distraction you can choose. Your favourite film means fewer stress hormones in your body before, during and after surgery. Audiovisual distraction offers a preventive solution for intervening early in the cycle of anxiety.
Stress is directly linked to wound healing and therefore to recovery. The physiological stress response causes a rise in cortisol levels, which weakens the useful early inflammatory response. As a result, wound healing mechanisms are interrupted and impaired.
But you want your wounds to heal quickly, so that you need to stay in hospital for less time and can fully recover at home in your familiar surroundings.
